Questions
Texans ask.

Real answers to real questions. If you're new to deregulated electricity (or you've just had a sticker-shock bill), start here.

How is my Texas electricity bill calculated?+
Your bill is your total kWh used times your energy charge, plus TDU delivery charges (transmission and distribution), plus any base or monthly fees, plus taxes. In deregulated Texas markets, you choose the energy charge by picking a Retail Electric Provider (REP). The TDU charge is set by your utility (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, TNMP) and is the same regardless of which REP you choose.
Why is my Texas electric bill so high?+
The five most common culprits: (1) summer AC running too hard, (2) an old plan rate that auto-renewed at a higher price, (3) hidden tier penalties on "bill credit" plans that punish you if you use under 1000 kWh, (4) an aging electric water heater or pool pump that runs constantly, (5) a recent rate hike. Try our bill diagnostic to identify yours.
Can I switch electricity providers in Texas?+
Yes — if you live in a deregulated area (most of Texas, including Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, McAllen, and most suburbs), you can switch any time. There's no service interruption, no new wires, no technician visit. The same poles deliver power; only the billing company changes. Switching usually takes 1–2 billing cycles.
What's a TDU charge?+
TDU stands for Transmission & Distribution Utility. It's the company that physically owns and maintains the poles and wires in your area. They charge a fixed fee that appears on every Texas electricity bill, regardless of which retail provider you pick. The four major TDUs are Oncor (DFW), CenterPoint (Houston), AEP (South/Central TX), and TNMP (scattered).
Are fixed-rate or variable-rate plans better?+
For most Texans, fixed-rate plans are safer. You lock in a price per kWh for 6, 12, 24, or 36 months. Variable-rate plans can be cheaper short-term but spike during high-demand months (summer especially). The 2021 winter storm showed how brutal variable rates can be. Unless you're confident in market timing, go fixed.
